Shannyn, our 8 year old third grader really enjoyed reading the following book series:

"Geronimo Stilton" by Geronimo Stilton - The character is an Italian speaking mouse who lives on Isola dei Topi (the Island of Mice) and works as a journalist for the fictional newspaper)

"Magic School Bus" (Science)
You should be able to get all of these books from your local library. They are always on sale at "Scholastic's - Customer Appreciation Sales".
